I May Have Bitten Off More Than I Can Chew

One of my goals for April is to finish my “On Ringo Lake” quilt to the flimsy stage. This was a Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt in (I believe) 2017.

I fell behind during the actual mystery. After the final reveal I put the whole thing on temporary hold. I wasn’t in love with the sashing or the layout or the overwhelming use of the peachy-coral-pink fabrics. I hope this doesn’t offend Bonnie, but it just didn’t thrill me.

The blocks have been in time-out, while I’ve tried to decide what to do. I saw other people finishing their ORL quilts in various ways. I saved pictures that I could use for reference. I tried out various options. Nothing was clicking.

I finally decided that I was just going to use a neutral sashing with the little nine patches as cornerstones. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

But when I tried out various fabrics as a sashing, I couldn’t find anything that made me happy. I finally thought that I’d like a striped fabric for the sashing. Of course I wanted to use something in my stash, since it is overflowing the storage in the studio.

Would you believe that I did not have a single piece of striped neutral fabric that made me smile when I tried it as a sashing!?! Oh sure, I had some striped neutrals but none that were large enough yardage to make all the sashing pieces (112 – 3 1/2″x9 1/2″ pieces)

And that’s when inspiration hit me over the head and I realized I could make striped fabric by sewing strips together. Yes, as an ardent follower of Bonnie Hunter, I finally thought of string piecing some sashing!!

And that is why I may have bitten off more than I can chew. When I stated my goals for April, I thought I had a pretty easy solution for finishing ORL – cut the rectangles and sew everthing together. Now I am in the midst of pulling 100’s of strings and sewing them all together. Then cutting the sashing to size and eventually sewing it all together into a flimsy.

Since finishing this is only one of my goals, I’m not too sure if I’ll be able get everything done this month. I think that I need another dedicated sewing day to get things caught up. 😉

But today is tax day, so it won’t be today. 😦

If you wouldn’t mind sending me some positive energy so that I can remain on task, I’d appreciate it.
