Organizing My Stash

One of the things I’ve been very pleased about doing is organizing my fabric scraps. That was one of the reasons I was able to give in to the temptation of making another Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt – almost all of the strips for making the units were already cut and sorted.

As you can see in the photo, I have my strips sorted by neutrals and colors in each size that I cut. There are actually 6 sizes that I use – 1″, 1 1/2″, 2″, 2 1/2″, 3 1/2″ & 4 1/2″. My favorite size is 1 1/2″. I love to make little 9 patch units in that size. My boxes for 1″ strips are at the cabin for a project that I’m only working on when I’m there. As I cut my strips, if there are any 1″ strips, I just leave them on the edge of my cutting table and grab them whenever we go to the cabin.

I realized after taking the photo that my 1 1/2″ neutral box was MIA. No worries, I found it beside Lucy, the sewing machine in the sun room.

What you may not be able to tell is that the color boxes are getting really full – like, I can barely get them shut and the thin plastic lids are bulging, so the stack is getting wobbly.

One solution would be to start making more quilts to use up all the strips in the various sizes. If it weren’t for the fact that I already have a lot of quilts that need finishing, this would be an acceptable option. But I’ve suggested to myself that finishing some quilts would be an excellent idea for 2019.

And yet, I still have the other idea of cutting up my scraps into usable strips. And I need a place to keep them.

What to do, what to do!?!

It’s possible that more shoe boxes might get purchased in the near future. And I will further sort the colors by “Cool” and “Warm” in each strip size. So blue, green, purple, gray & black in one box and red, orange, pink, yellow and brown in the second box.

Of course this is based on Bonnie’s scrap user system, so I will have to start some projects with all these strips sometime!! 😉
